About us

The Phoenix Stroke Center Coalition (PSCC) advises Arizona Emergency Medical Systems (AEMS) regarding which facilities merit inclusion in the Stroke Matrix.

Stroke Matrix

Patients deemed to be having an acute stroke who meet specific criteria are directed to the nearest “Stroke Center,” potentially bypassing local hospitals without such a designation. The list of participating Stroke Centers and the triage protocols are referred to as the “Stroke Matrix.”

Arizona Emergency Medical Systems (AEMS)

In Maricopa, Pinal and Gila Counties, AEMS is an organization that maintains a redirection system for stroke patients who are transported to an Emergency Department from the field.

Advise which facilities merit inclusion in stroke matrix

  1. Maintenance of national certification as a Primary Stroke Center (PSC), Thrombectomy Capable (TCS) or Primary+, or Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC)
  2. Achievement of additional targets that are set and reviewed by the PSCC

Monitor Stroke Quality Performance Measures

Stroke Center certification ensures the necessary processes are in place to care for patients affected by stroke. However, certification does not guarantee processes will be implemented in a manner that optimizes patient outcomes.

The performance criteria established by the PSSC provide additional assurance that the redirection of patients away from non-matrix facilities to designated Stroke Centers will result in optimal care.

Quality Measure Process

  • Collaboratively monitor Stroke Matrix Member Performance
  • Provide ongoing feedback and support to each facility
