Stroke Matrix and Stroke Systems of Care

In Maricopa, Pinal and Gila Counties, the Arizona Emergency Medical Systems (AEMS) organization maintains a redirection system for stroke patients who are transported to an Emergency Department from the field.

Patients deemed to be having an acute stroke who meet specific criteria are directed to the nearest “Stroke Center,” potentially bypassing local hospitals without such a designation. The list of participating Stroke Centers and the triage protocols are referred to as the “Stroke Matrix.”
